We are joining the American Library Association to promote awareness of challenges to library materials and to celebrate freedom of speech during Banned Books Week. Banned Books Week occurs from 9/24 through 10/1. We are extending our celebration through the end of October though.

Win a Basket of English Treats!

The basket (valued at $32) is on display in the showcase on the right, which is devoted to the 2012 Winter Session trip to London. Entry forms are located to the left of the case. The Civil War comes alive at Chautauqua 2011

Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and Harriet Tubman will be making a stop in North East, Maryland, on July 8-10, as an extension of the Chautauqua Institute and sponsored by the Maryland Humanities Council.

The American Civil War: A House Divided will be brought to life with living history performances at St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church at 315 S. Main Street. The event begins with live music at 4 and the performance at 4:30 on all three days. Mr. Lincoln will be featured on July 8th, Ms. Tubman on the 9th, and Mr. Davis on the 10th.

Be sure to stop by to see these captivating performances in preparation for the book reading discussions HCC will host in the spring of 2012, Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War.

HCC is Talking about the Civil War

HCC has been awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to host a series of book discussions. The series is called “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of the American Civil War.” It will feature dialogue on different aspects of the American Civil War.

James Karmel, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History, will lead the conversations based on March; Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam; and America's War: Talking About the Civil War and Emancipation on their 150th Anniversaries.

HCC is partnering with the Harford County Public Library, the Spirits of Tudor Hall and the Historical Society of Harford County to present these discussions, which will take place in March and April 2012. Mark your calendars now to talk about the Civil War with HCC and Dr. Karmel!
